A relations diagram which is also known as ER diagram or entity relationship diagram is a commonly used technique in businesses and companies. This is a graphical representation of different entities and the relationships between them. Most of the time, this diagram model is used in computing and programming in which it is used to sort out or organize the data in the database and the relations of each piece of data to different users. We can also say that when this model is implicated in a business, it defines the different entities or points of interest for the owners of the business along with the mutual relationship between each entity for the sake of the owners.
Importance of Relationship Diagram:
We have discussed above that a relations diagram is a graphical presentation of the entities and their relationships in a business model. This also explains the importance of this model or diagram in businesses and companies. You can implement this diagram in any kind of business that you want and it doesn’t make any difference if your company offers products or services or you have a for-profit or non-profit organization.
Application of Relationship Diagram in Business:
We have divided the uses or applications of relations diagrams depending on their types. There are three basic types of relations diagrams and we have explained each of them below so that you can understand what kind of diagram is more suitable for your business model.
- One – One:
This is a relations diagram in which one entity is only linked with one other entity. For example, entity A will be linked to Entity B in this type of diagram and entity C will be linked to Entity D. This model is used when there are only two entities in the business model and it’s only needed to draw and explain a relationship between these two entities. - One – Many:
In this model or type of relations diagram, one entity is linked to more than one other entity. This can be explained as ‘A’ being an entity is linked to other entities including B, C, and D. This model is implemented when there is more than one entity but one of them is the key or the main entity which is linked to many other entities and it is important to explain the relationship between the key entity and other entities. - Many – Many:
In this type of relations model, each entity is linked to more than one entity at the same time. For example, entity A will be linked to entities B, C, and D whereas entity B will also be linked to entities C, D, and E. This type of relations model is implemented when there are more than enough entities in the business model and it is very complicated to understand each entity and their relationships in between them. This model then explains each entity as a separate unit and the relationship between each entity and other entities in the model.
